About Gavin Huttley¶

Professor Gavin Huttley spent most of his career developing statistical models and implementing them in open-source software for the research community. His research focused on understanding genetic variation, its mechanistic origins, and its phenotypic consequences. A software library he developed was used to write QIIME, an influential and widely used application for microbiome analysis. Statistical methods he developed have been implemented in multiple software packages, including the cogent3 library. His academic work has accrued over 83,000 citations, and he makes approximately 2,500 contributions per year to open-source software projects. Until the end of 2025, he was a Professor at the Australian National University. He retains an honorary professorship in the School of Computing and a visiting fellowship in the Research School of Biology at the Australian National University. He now works as a consultant and freelancer.
